12.3.98: Pumpkins are management shopping!

'Tis the season for holiday shopping, and rock stars are no exception to that rule. Seems that Billy Corgan has been spending his off-time in sunny Southern California, driving between tony locations to interview potential managers. He's been in the market since he extricated his Smashing Pumpkins from their short tenure at Q Prime last month, a move that some industry pundits interpreted as a reaction to soft sales of Adore, the supergroup's latest album. According to industry sources, the top contenders in the management sweepstakes are Gold Mountain Entertainment's John Silva, who guides the fortunes of the Beastie Boys and Beck, and who is said to be leaving his post at Gold Mountain to launch his own management firm with veteran record exec Gary Gersh. Jim Guerinot, who watches over Chris Cornell, the Offspring and No Doubt has reportedly had a couple meetings, as has Arthur Spivak, who is best known as Tori Amos' father confessor. Fiona Apple's and Dave Navarro's Andy Slater is also in line, followed by Jeff Kwatinetz and Peter Katsis, who have nurtured the careers of Korn, Limp Bizkit and Orgy. It seems the only mega-manager not in the running is U2's Paul McGuinness, who reportedly was Corgan's second choice two years ago, after the Chicago band left Andy Gould's firm for Q Prime. Insiders noted how much Corgan respected McGuinness, and prophesized that's where the band would most likely end up. But a call to Dublin has squelched that speculation for now, since a representative from McGuinness' Principal Management said that the Smashing Pumpkins "aren't working with us."
